Natural Resource Scientist/Field Lead (San Marcos, Texas)

Whitenton Group, Inc. (WGI) is seeking to hire a Natural Resource Scientist/Field Lead in the San Marcos, Texas office. This person will assist with a variety of projects in the southern US on private and government-owned lands. WGI is looking to fill this position in the immediate future.

Responsibilities:

  • Desktop evaluations/assessments
  • Conduct stream/wetland delineation(s) following the USACE guidance
  • Conduct protected species habitat evaluations and presence/absence surveys
  • GPS data collection and processing
  • Use of ArcGIS software to produce maps
  • Report compilation (environmental constraints analyses, environmental assessments, preliminary report(s) of findings, )
    o Communicate effectively with crew(s) and supervisors
    o Lead a field crew
    o Client and agency interaction

Requirements:

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in the southern US conducting field surveys and data collection for wetland delineations & habitat evaluations.
  • Overnight and extended travel. At minimum, one week per month this candidate will be traveling Monday through Friday.

  • Good writing and editing skills
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with:
    o USACE wetland delineation manual/regional supplements in the southern US
    o USACE wetland datasheets
    o Delineation of Ordinary High Water Marks for streams
    o Protected species and stream/wetland delineation
    o Oil and gas work (well pad, pipeline, utility lines, water well/ponds, and facilities)
  • BS (MS preferred) in a natural resource field of stud
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Random drug test/screen
  • ATV operation
  • Solutions oriented
  • Quick response time
  • Must pass background security screening and safety training(s) for a variety of clients
  • Physically able to perform field surveys and withstand challenging field conditions (terrain, extreme heat/cold, poisonous/biting/stinging critters, etc.
  • Work a minimum of 40 hours per week
  • Available to work weekends/holidays (when needed)
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment and fire-retardant clothing when required
  • Great attitude
  • Ability to travel in single engine aircraft

Preferred, Not Required:

  • Certifications (CWB or PWS) and permitted by USFWS to conduct presence/absence surveys for federally-listed protected species
  • Experience surveying in the Arid West Region
  • Familiar with CCCA, CCA, and WAFWA guidelines/requirements
  • Experience working on government-owned (state/federal) lands
  • Water/soil sampling
  • Basic mechanical skills (truck/ATV/UTV)
  • CPR trained
