Description

Problem soils, as defined by the Field Indicators of Hydric Soils in the United States, version 8.2, Cautions note (USDA NRCS, 2018), occur where soil morphology seems inconsistent with the landscape, vegetation, or observable hydrology, therefore it may be necessary to obtain the assistance of an experienced soil or wetland scientist to determine whether the soil is hydric.

This class will primarily focus on the Columbia Bottomlands, located to the West and South of Houston, an area that contains Problem Soils that are extremely difficult to interpret hydric characteristics. This class is being offered to individuals who have completed basic and intermediate hydric soils training. The class will provide advanced training techniques that allow the professional to become proficient in recognizing soils formed in grayish and reddish parent materials, that exhibit high pH and low organic matter content, are classified as Mollisols and Vertisols, and have relict redoximorphic features.

When soil morphology seems inconsistent with the landscape, vegetation, or observable hydrology, the assistance of an experienced soil or wetland scientist may be needed to determine whether the soil is hydric. The previous statement identifies “The Problem Soil”.

Note1: Previous soils experience is required for this class. The instructors will quickly scan all basic wetlands information and move directly to the advanced concepts that will prepare the professional for efficient work in these challenging “hydric soils” landscapes.

Note2: This class has been pre-approved by the Society of Wetland Scientists Professional Certification Program for training credits towards the Professional Wetland Scientist certification.

Once registered, you will receive confirmation and payment option information.
